Which materials are attracted to a magnet?

We spent some time making sure we knew which materials were attracted to magnets today. Most discovered that it was metal that was attracted to a magnet but they were surprised to discover that bronze, brass and even Mr Hartley’s wedding ring wasn’t pulled by the magnetic force.

We found out that it was only iron (or something that has iron in it) that is subject to a magnetic force.

We went on to look at whether a magnet has a different strength and tried to make lines of paper clips to varying degrees of success.

How many did you manage to “stick” to your magnet in a line? Do you think a magnet has different strengths?
